The Washington Post has an article that describes how Hollywood wealth is turning the act of supporting individual congressional races into a new type of hobby. One of the most notable quotes was, “I don’t have terribly negative feelings about the Democratic National Committee, but I don’t look to them for guidance…I don’t need the Democratic Party to tell me that I’m excited about particular hopefuls.” This alone sums up the article for me. Big party donors in some circles think they can do more for the causes they believe in by supporting individual campaigns than supporting the Democratic Party that used to support their platform; so much so that they are actually turning the support they give into a sport.“Flipping the House has become a major, major pastime in Hollywood,” stated one donor.
It says a lot about the politics of the nation when the big party donors are no longer supportive of their parties. They become just big donors who see fit to support whomever they wish for office. I very much agree that this is a necessary change in mentality if we are going to see meaningful change in our government. We as a people must look beyond the political label that is pasted on a candidate. We must get invested in them individually. Now, it seems to be popular to be an independent, even in Hollywood.
